Natural wine from Vipava valley

✦

The Vipava Valley is a wine region situated between the Karst Plateau and the Alps in western Slovenia. Just an hour’s drive from Ljubljana and half an hour from the Italian border, it is home to vineyards that produce wines with a distinctive character that is difficult to replicate anywhere else in Europe.

The character of wines

The sub-Mediterranean climate of the Vipava Valley is strongly influenced by the constant alternation between the warm, humid south-westerly wind known as the mornik and the cold north-easterly burja wind. Together, they play a decisive role in shaping the distinctive character of Vipava wines. The vineyards are mostly located on elevated, south-facing slopes above the village, where they benefit from abundant sunshine and constant airflow.
Vinogradi ležijo večinoma na dvignjenih južnih, sončnih in prevetrenih pobočjih nad vasjo.

The soil consists of marl and flysch, formed from ancient seabed sediments. Rich in minerals, it combines with the Mediterranean climate to create unique conditions for growing vines.

Indigenous grape varieties

Zelen is one of the most widespread indigenous white grape varieties in the Vipava Valley. Vineyards planted on marl and flysch produce wines with pronounced freshness and a distinctive mineral character. Zelen is known for its lightness and floral notes, making it ideal for drinking while young. It is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with local cuisine, whether served as a refreshing aperitif or alongside lighter dishes such as fish, seafood and fresh salads.

Pinella is another indigenous white grape variety from the Vipava Valley. Like Zelen, it is known for its freshness, floral aromas and mineral character. Vineyards growing on marl and flysch produce wines of remarkable freshness and elegance. Pinela is excellent when enjoyed young, but it can also age gracefully and develop greater complexity over time.

Poljšakica is the rarest of the three varieties, planted on only a few hectares. It was named after the winegrower who brought it to the valley two centuries ago.

An experience you won't find in larger wine regions

The Vipava Valley is not Bordeaux or Tuscany. And that is precisely its advantage.

The wineries are small, family-run, and shaped by the hands of owners who know every vine. Wine tasting here is not a packaged tourist experience—it is an encounter with people who have devoted their lives to one place and its wines. The story you hear over a glass is genuine.

One such winery is Krapež Winery in Vrhpolje—an organic family estate that has been producing wine since 1928.

The family cultivates eight hectares of vineyards according to organic principles. The distinctive character of their wines comes from the area’s unique natural features, including its microclimate and soil, combined with meticulous work in both the vineyard and the cellar and a deep respect for nature. Fermentation is spontaneous and lasts between five and seven days. The wines mature in oak and acacia barrels and are bottled without fining or filtration, with low levels of sulphites. They are known for their powerful structure and pronounced minerality.

Their Malvasia received a Platinum Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

When and how to visit

The Vipava Valley can be visited throughout the year. Spring brings green vineyards and a peaceful valley before the tourist season begins. Autumn is harvest time—the vineyards turn golden, fermentation fills the cellars with activity, and the scent of grapes hangs in the air.

The valley lies along the Ljubljana-Trieste highway, making it an ideal stopover on the way between Slovenia and Italy. Most wineries accept visitors by prior arrangement — meaning you get full attention, not crowded tourist tours.

For those seeking an authentic wine experience away from the crowds, without compromising on quality, the Vipava Valley is the perfect destination.
